Game one was about as bad as expected

Thursday’s Pacers-Thunder NBA Finals Game 1 averaged a 4.7 rating and 8.91 million viewers on ABC, marking the lowest rated and least-watched Game 1 of the Finals of the Nielsen people meter era (1988-present) outside of the two COVID-affected series, Bucks-Suns in July 2021 (4.5, 8.70M) and Heat-Lakers in the “bubble” on the final day of September 2020 (4.1, 7.69M).

Indiana’s last-second win, which peaked with 11.07 million during the final minutes, was the least-watched Finals game of any kind since that 2021 opener — and the ninth-least watched in the people-meter era.

The name recognition (cities, stars) just is not there this year. It’s a shame too because it was a great game, good basketball was being played on the biggest stage, but it that wasn’t enough for game 1.

I think one the factors is it's so many other forms of entertainment out there nowadays. And specific niches. I think back in the day all you had was a few dozen channels so you might watch the game but now what every your specific interests are in you can binge that content online.

I know usually on this topic people like to talk crap about the players and the league. And there could be some truth to that but now you're competing with online gaming, streaming, social media, and whatever else is on tv game night.

Let's keep this in perspective....

1. How many of you on here have a Nielsen ratings box tracker on your tv? I'd guess no more than 1 person, if any of you. Do we need to explain again how this works and is wildly inaccurate numbers?

2. The highlight video on YouTube has over 3 million views already. People are interested.

3. I'd be interested to know how many YouTube TV STREAMS they had.

4. Who gives a shyt. I'd rather see a game like last night than a boring ass Lakers-Knicks finals with a giant ratings number, which really doesn't mean anything
