The five second rule which I rarely have ever seen called is one that I have never understood at all. Not the out of bounds one. This one=• The official(s) will visually commence a five-second count if an offensive player with the ball and not facing-up starts dribbling below the free throw line extended while being closely guarded; or if he starts dribbling outside and then penetrates below the free throw line extended while being closely guarded. The five-second count commences when the offensive player penetrates the free throw line extended. The penalty is the offensive team’s loss of possession of the ball." This is not the same as the Mark Jackson rule.

They called that 5 second on Wade in the Pacers series and it was the 1st time I ever seen it called.

3 in the key :scusthov:

The Wade, Kobe, etc leanin' into defenders shootin' foul :scusthov: :scusthov: :scusthov:

That's probably the third most important rule in organized basketball after traveling and fouls. Without it most teams would have a hard time scoring over 60 points and guys like Howard, Hibbert, Bynum would camp in the lane ready to block anything that comes through. Could you image playing a 2-3 zone with no lane restrictions.............................................shyt would be atrocious. It would be like watching a Syracuse game but ten times worse

I read (in Phil Jackson's book The Last Season) this week, that when the 3 second rule was put into effect, the lane was 6ft wide...now it's 16ft wide. He (Phil) went on to give his opinion that they should atleast raise the penalty to 5 seconds.

Even though he had selfish reasons for wanting it like that (Shaq), I have to agree with him. 3 seconds is pretty restrictive, even though most refs are typically lax in calling it.

Really cause i don't remember that happening before the 90's. Players today are so babied it almost turns me off to nba ball completely. That is one of the worst rules i have ever seen in the sport right after that stupid handchecking rule and right next to this touch foul culture we see now in the nba. :rudy:

And they don't even call traveling or palming anymore, they might as well take those rules out of the book

i think 5 seconds could b ok if they stretch the key to 20ft wide

The Barkley rule. He used to have his back to the basket and back himself down for like 15 seconds. It made the game slow. The rule changes to spur more offense for the game.

1966-67
• The following language was added to the Zone Defense Rule: "After the offensive team has advanced the ball to its front court, a defensive player may not station himself in the key area longer than three seconds if it is apparent he is making no effort to play an opponent. The three second count starts when the offensive team is in clear control in the front court."

2001-02
• Illegal defense guidelines will be eliminated in their entirety.
• A new defensive three-second rule will prohibit a defensive player from remaining in the lane for more than three consecutive seconds without closely guarding an offensive player.

The NBA has always had some form of a lane restriction rule whether it was limiting zone defense, 3 in the key, etc...
