That is too much but if you trying to build for a championship run in the near future at what point do you start making moves instead of waiting for free agency when it's shown that Boston isn't a place where top free agents go usually.

Well for Ainge, he clearly has a lot of favorites that he WON'T part with (Smart and Brown). If he could get the players he wanted (George/Butler or whoever else) without having to give away his favored players, then he would do so. He definitely sees the growth potential in Brown and Smart and is probably relying on them to keep playing as well as they have on their relatively cheap contracts.

Ainge is trying to balance building a contender while keeping his diamonds in the rough and building for the future. Weird situation.
