I'm an East Coast rap head forever, but I have never defended ths shyt because there is no defending it. In fact, I've pointed out before that the history of hip hop's move into criminality rap is that NWA blew up and the white kids in the suburbs looooved it. As a result, record labels wanted to sign mainly that type of act, and NYC which had previously been the innovators fell in line. I was never comfortable with it, but it would have meant giving up hip hop basically entirely and the fact is that a lot of these acts were super talented. That's the difference. Regardless of subject matter, they were great emcees. Unlike these present day drill rappers. But when NYC went superthug for basically every mainstream act, the diversity was lost forever. Now NYC is a cesspool of drill rappers. I wish NYC had stood with Jeru, Mos, De La, and others who tried to call it out and tried to gate keep but they went along and so gone was the variety. It all leads up to where we are today. I've said before that if I had a choice of giving back Wu, Mobb Deep, etc. if hip hop wouldn't have gone the way it did, I would do it no matter how much I've enjoyed a lot of their music.Kool G rap
