Going from a contractor to a permanent position at my job soon. How do I ask for the salary I want ? Should I give my number first?
First things first, you
NEVER EVER give the first offer. They know what they are willing to pay you, if you accidentally go lower than that, then you're screwed. The first number will anchor the entire conversation, let them pony up first. Even better, see if they can give 2 offers before you counter.
With a salary, usually your vacation time is fixed as many companies have a tenure based system in which they use to calculate paid time off e.g. 1-2 years of service = 15 days off, 3-5 = 19 days off etc. What may work is the ability to work from home on certain days etc.
You'll want to go in with knowledge of the salary and what the competitors are paying. Also, never, ever take the first offer.
My first position out of college I messed up by verbally committing to the first offer they gave me
I talked to my family friend in the company and she said I could have easily got 3-5k more
It's crazy because my co-worker that is leaving in 10 days essentially told me that he's banking like 15k more than I am but we technically have the same title.
But he has more work experience so that can explain it a bit.
Hope this helps.
