pending a background check, a small advertising agency out in the hill country is going to send me an offer. i'm excited, it seems like a cool place to work.

went over the benefits first in the call. 401k, insurance, paid leave, holidays, the works. So far so good.

then she asks if I talked about salary with the employer. Now comes the fun part, i was thinking. I had internet detectived every little thing about this company, but i could not find a damn thing about what they typically offer for salary ranges for this job.

i tossed out what my old full-time agency was paying me - 50k. she seemed totally fine with it, saying it was "the low end" for what they pay for this position.

had me like:sas2: shouldnt have used those words.

She said I'll get that offer out to you asap, if that works for you.

i'm preparing to obviously send it back now. how do i put this question into the right words: can you tell me what the typical salary range for this position is?:leostare:

i dont NEED to take this job, im working at a small place up until i get the right $$ which i can jump for at my leisure.

Try finding what companies in the same field and of the same size pay for this job. That could be your leverage.

its a slippery slope....some places pay more and some pay less in this town...not sure what they pay.[...]
How is 50K regarding that ? If it's in the low end of the bracket, you may have a clue at least.

that is how you ask the question. You should've asked it in the moment. If you don't place yourself correctly, you will be paying for it for years trying to get raises to catch up to the floor you're already below.

If you feel the offer is low whatsoever, say to the recruiter "the total compensation seems strong, but to be frank I expected something different based on my knowledge of the position. I think we both feel that I am a good fit, but want to know what is the typical salary range you offer for this position for unseasoned and well seasoned hires before I decide between offers."

the last line is key because it plants the seed that they are competing with others.

lol

they did indeed lock it in at that rate. time to counter....i'll write a letter.

thinking to ask for 15% more.

will settle for 10% more.

essentially thats the difference. There is a range for "never worked at this level" and "seasoned hire at this level" employees. its good to know those ranges as a comparison to your experience.

if you're a 10 year executive employee and are paid like a first time executive director, thats disrespect

they remained firm at the lowball #

screw it. turning it down. the hunt continues (hopefully good things to come from company #1s pending offer).

In the future when they bring up salary and if they ask you what you make you tell them :BUT you make it clear you are looking for more money...

"I am currently making XXX per year as a blah blah blah but my job skills and abilities have outgrown the role and I am looking for a position that is going to challenge me and keep my skill sharp in this current highly competitive global workplace. Obviously I would be looking for at least a market rate salary to match my abilities, drive, and job title. I'd be open to other forms of compensation that is not salary as well."

That last part is very important. This brand new windows admin guy at my job swung 3 extra weeks of vacation because the company wouldn't budge on salary. Pretty shocking that just a lowly windows admin could do that.

Hindsight being 20/20 you probably should've lied about what you was making
