NFL hall of fame and Heisman Trophy winner Orenthal James SImpson, known to the world as O.J., passed away suddenly on Thursday afternoon from cardiac complications due to a mild case of COVID-19.
Simpson’s family released a statement saying the hall of famer was reportedly diagnosed with COVID earlier this week, but had only displayed mild symptoms before he went into cardiac arrest early Thursday afternoon. Simpson was pronounced dead upon arrival after succumbing in the ambulance en route to the hospital.
There was some confusion after initial reports came out as a video had just been released by him on Twitter, but apparently his Tweets are prerecorded and released on a schedule.
O.J. Simpson won the Heisman Trophy at USC in 1968, although he lost the trophy itself in a settlement over the murder charges he was dubiously acquitted of. He is also known, aside from his Murder charge and later felony convivtion and prison sentence for kidnapping, as one of the best running backs in the history of the game of football; Simpson was the first back to rush for 2,000 yards in a single season.
He later became a minor Hollywood star, appearing in numerous movies, commercials, and television shows. He is survived by his 5 children.
