He doesn't call himself an intellectual. other people do. He doesn't need B.O.B. or anyone else to make himself look smart. He's an astrophysicist. I think he cares very little about trying to appear smart. He just is smart. If he cared about trying to look smart for other people, he wouldn't be a successful person. Successful people usually value their time highly, and don't waste it on trivial shyt like that. He's said for years and years that one of his pet peeves with society is when people in positions of power and influence misinform other people, even if it's not malicious.

Also not directed at you, but this whole "I'm gonna doubt everything" group of people that claim it's in the name of skepticism are crazy. There's skepticism and there's "pics or it didn't happen." I swear that "pics or it didn't happen" is a meme that has gone so far that educated people actually won't believe the earth is flat unless they get a flight into outer space and can take a picture of it on an iPhone.


This isn't how science works. Asking questions and being a skeptic is fantastic, but people are taking it so far that they're going regressing out society and our culture. And I'm sure someone that believes the earth is flat will just reply with something like "Well you haven't seen it so shut the fukk up. How do you really know though?"

I understand that a comment like this is well intentioned and it may be an intuition that you truly have deep down. Saying "Look I'm not claiming anything, I'm just asking questions, because I don't know. In fact I don't know anything that I can't see/taste/touch/etc" is a humble thing to say.

But at the same time, to make a comment like that is to say that we can know almost nothing about the world, ourselves, and our place in the world.

It's not "open minded" to believe that nothing can be relied on as fact unless you can experience it 1st hand.

That's what's crazy to me. I've flown high up in an airplane before. If you look out the window you can fukking see that the earth and the horizon is curves. It doesn't look like a straight or flat line at all.


These people talk about needing visual evidence and it's right there! You can be on some mountains and see that it's not flat. It doesn't look like a fukking tennis ball in terms of how much it curves, but if you get high enough you can easily see that it's not flat.

The moon doesn't smell like anything. There's no oxygen there, so there's nothing to smell. Do you really think the only reason that you don't know the moon doesn't smell like apple pie is because you or someone you trust hasn't been there yet?

Again, to make comments like the bolded is basically saying that we cannot know anything about the world we live in, ourselves as a species, and our place in the universe.

I'm happy to draw that out and explain further. But we must be able to rely on reliable information from reliable sources. You say you're skeptical, and I was a philosophy major so I'm aware that there are different schools and models of skepticism, and different skeptics identify differently, and some really do basically put their head in the sand and just pretend that the only world that can know about is the 6 inches in front of their face. If you're one of those kinds of skeptics, I doubt there's anything I can say to sway you. Pyrrho came to the conclusion that nothing can be known for certain. If you're into Pyrrhonism/Fallibilism, or right next door, then I'll stop while I'm ahead and I'm sorry for wasting your time.

If you are truly as skeptical as you claim to be, take off your clothes and go stand outside in the middle of summer in a spot with no shade from 9am until 5pm and see A. how long it takes you to feel hot and B. how you're feeling the next day. Obviously you wouldn't do that.
