Certain artists can pull it off. I don't think every rapper can do it tho. Rappers like Nelly don't really got music that goes well with live bands but imo rappers like Kendrick, Jay-Z, Nas can pull off live bands.

There are definitely exceptions especially when the actual beat has instrumentation.

It is! And to @xiceman191's earlier point Jay's stuff with live instrumentation is really good as well. A lot of it arguably better than the album versions. The Tiny Desk series on youtube has a of lot rappers on with a backing band.this is actually good

Also didn't make sense to go into the audience to hype them up for a song they didn't know.
That song was a MEGAHIT. If they appeared a month later, crowd participation would have been better, even with the exact same audience.
