So through some grinding/linkedin I have managed to find a graduate from my school that works for one of the 3 most prestigious Investment Banks on Wall Street in equity research. He is a managing director and has been in the industry for 20 years. He wasnt replying to my linkedin messages after accepting my connection but I managed to obtain his email address through some investigating and sent him an email that featured an introduction, my resume and a research report I did my self for AMC Networks (Mad Men, Walking Dead, Breaking bad, etc.)

Not sure if he actually read all of it, but nonetheless he finally replied and I am gonna have a conversation with him over the phone in a few weeks (he lives in NYC, I in Toronto). Don't know much about him except that he loves golf but I am looking forward to chopping it up.

Have any of yall ever networked this way? How did it turn out for you?

I've met with him a few times actually. Really nice guy...if I went for my CFA In sure he'd hook me up... Hard to break in to the industry though

In this case I actually ended up applying for a job. I had a call scheduled with this guy because he's in NYC and the job application was before. I asked if I could list his name/email as a referral when they ask about where you heard about the job seeing as how he saw some of my work.

He replied basically reeming me out about that being unethical

I only asked because I asked my dad/sister before and they said it'd be fine to ask...that it shouldn't b a big deal. My dad and sis are professionals so I took their word

In situations it's really up to the person. Your dad wasn't wrong but the guy.didn't fwel comfy doing it. Someone else would.
If you don't ask you would have never known.
