Its supposed to be a hiphop thing...maybe from the sound-system influence, same as reggae and dancehall... same thing with jazz/ blues standards.....similar to music traditions brought over by the African slaves, where classic rhythms and songs were performed but every individual put their own spin on it.

Its the black mans universal cultural tradition.
