His bosses are putting pressure on him to make movies for the widest possible audience that will age well in terms of how women and minorities are portrayed. The problem is that they end up making a "product" not a film. People get bored by these formulaic movies. When you hire a director and writer to make a movie, you let them create their vision, not what will make you a lot of money.
