Hair can be "incompletely dominant" and express that way, which is how some people come to show different hair colors on the same head as opposed to straight colors (brown/blonde as opposed to brown OR blonde) Griffin's hair is likely incomplete dominant with brown/black and red. All it takes is one red gene to show tint of red though.
