New California race classification system

It means if the school is trying to make sure there are at least 14% African American students, they take apps from that category until they hit that number. the only people who should be salty about this are asians, they Overrepresented like a mofo.

This screws over Sudanese and Somali folks as well. There are a lot of Somali folks in San Diego.

nikka i know this and have realize this, its why i included africans in that group of "others" who can be grouped in with whites

i been saying for a while now that blackness = ADOS, meaning i dont include africans and caribbeans(unless they have a ADOS parent). Infact i been saying they shouldnt even check "black" on the census and should put "other"(unless they have a ADOS parent)

Oh yeah the Affirmative Action push has Asian hands all over it.

They're willing to ignore legacy admits, especially at Ivies (which are a much larger share of the population) but zero in on a relative handful of black and Latino admits.

Asians tend outperform everyone on standardized tests for many reasons and so they basically want everyone judged on high school GPA/class rank/course load and then SAT/ACT scores. In their mind, that's the only "fair" way to select students. They want to be judged based on the criteria where they are strongest as a group.

Problem with that is that it's like an NFL scout drafting a player solely based on his 40-time and # of bench press reps at 225 lbs but ignoring tape, drills, interviews etc.

Would I rather have yet another Chinese American student that scored 1500 on the SAT, grew up middle/upper-middle class, wants to major in engineering and played the violin.................

Or take Jamal and his 1300 SAT score, All-District receiver, 6th man on the basketball team and Student Council VP, working class kid that volunteers at the local Boys & Girls club and wants to go Pre-Law because he's seen so many of his homies get caught up in the judicial system?

Jamal is someone that could have a significant impact on his community and the UC school he's applying to. The Asian American kid is a dime-a-dozen to the admissions officer. Great stats on paper but what do they bring to your campus? Another introverted STEM kid with a profile like 100 applications you've already looked at.

Colleges (I think) want different kinds of people with various perspectives and experiences. Asians think "I should get into this school because I spent thousands of dollars on SAT prep and have done everything to game the system and look the best on paper."

The good news is starting this year, California colleges wont be using the ACT and SAT for admissions.

A lot of you on this site are dummies. The race classification is for Universities. The reason they are doing this is because of prop 16. Read up on prop 16, then come back to this thread. Also, if you go to Stanford or Berkley, you will see that the campus is filled with Somalis and Ethiopians. They aren't underrepresented. This is why Cali is changing the classification. It's so that if prop 16 gets passed, it will benefit the black people that are underrepresented.

I'm actually saddened by the dumb responses by the majority of you all . They don't mean that Somalis are LITERALLY white. They are classifying them as white for UC's so that they don't reap the benefits of prop 16 (since they are already over represented at UCs).
Trust me I live in Silicon valley, the place is filled with Ethiopians.

It's not about claiming anyone you goofy. This was done so that if prop 16 gets passed underrepresented black people will benefit from it. Somalis and Northern Sudanese aren't underrepresented on UC campuses.
Stanford is filled to the brim with Somalis and Ethiopians, if yu do see a black person (non east African) they are usually an athlete. The whole point of this classification change is to make it so that affirmative action policies can benefit those who really need it. That's also why they separated Asians into different groups. They trying to focus on South East Asians such as Cambodians etc. A lot of yall are really simple minded .

My guess is that you not even from Cali so you don't know what prop 16 is and why it's important. Which is why you and others in this thread posting dumb comments. On November 3rd Californians will have the choice to vote for certain "propositions" such as rent control, and affirmative action.
