I cant remember when exactly it was back in the day, but at one point only Anglo Saxons were considered white in America. Then as the black population in the states started to grow they reclassified what it was to be white and included Ibericans, Irish, Jews and other european whites to boost the numbers of the white population in the census. These other European whites were not classed as white till then.

Whiteness in America isn't skin color, it's fluid and it's about being normalized. Everyone sans ADOS can "become white" in America. Italians; Greeks, and Jews were way more "ethnic" than the Anglo whites in the early 20th century but got folded into "whiteness".

We see the same thing happening now w/ Latinos, they may be darker and more "ethnic", but they're getting folded into "whiteness" right as we speak.
