New coworker making 15k more - how to get a raise

So I started at this job 2 months ago. Great company, awesome manager, I love my job and for my first IT job, I’m happy with what I’m getting paid (50k).

So originally our IT team was a team of 3 but the guy who was supposed to be SysAdmin left because the company took way too long to find the 3rd guy help with the load. For a few weeks it was just me and my manager, but we recently found a new guy who is relatively inexperienced that joined as well. He’s a couple years older, and he has a few years of IT experience more than me.

But recently he revealed he’s making 65k. He’s a smart/nice guy but I’m definitely not 15k less than him. I was frustrated to hear this but maybe the company was desperate, and he does have a few years of experience so he has some merit.

We’re not allowed to talk about our salaries (my manager doesn’t care though) so I’m thinking in a few months to ask for a 10k bump. During the 2 months I’ve been here I got 2 new certs related to the job (AZ 900 and SC 900). I plan to get 2 more AZ certs (AZ104 and SC 300), I’m planning to sign up for Okta training, and I’ve been asking my manager to start putting me on projects he’s been working on. Since I plan to move to the city so I can be closer to work, I want to spin it as me needing more money to survive, and showing all the work I’ve done to put myself ahead. Is there anything else I’m overlooking?

he has more experience on paper so he was hired for more. why would you deserve a raise after 2 months ? maybe after 6.
Should’ve been more clear. I plan to ask after working here for 6 months

It's your first tech job, don't get too caught up in the salary difference (especially since he has more years than you). Learn all that you can, and in a year or two look for a new job in the 75k to 90k range. Unfortunately, it's not always about skill level. Sometimes it's about how badly a company wants someone with a certain number of years along with the right words on the resume.

In a few years you'll probably look back on this thread and laugh.

You're new to this so you will learn but this is the wrong mindset. Whether or not you feel he is or not is irrelevant, the company felt he was. While getting the certs is nice, you need to try to get involved in projects to show your true value to the company. Also be prepared for your manager to tell you no. Like @krexzen, you can do everything possible to show just how valuable you are to a company and they can still tell you no. Sometimes you will need to jump ship at multiple companies to find somewhere that fits you mentally and financially.

Two months is too short of a time to get a raise.

Your best bet is to jump ship, come with an external offer to leverage more pay (though with two months at the current gig, you might as well just bail if you get a better offer), or unionize (can of worms I don't feel like delving into right now).

Although this does exist, we need to take into consideration all the other argument made previously by other posters. Experience plays part. And perhaps he negotiated a better deal, because the company was in need of a specialist in a certain field (SysAdmin).

Nah he told me they didn’t negotiate. Just flat out ordered 65k. He’s not even a SysAdmin. We do the same shyt.

Get a new job offer from another company and use that to re-negotiate the terms.
Tell them you prefer to stay working for the company if they can match or come close to the offer. If you go into a negotiations as the weak party, they will tell you to fukk off indirectly

If you want more money. Get a new job.
Never use a new offer to renegotiate your current job :childplease: they might say yes but they will start looking for your replacement.
I won't say never but make sure you have a plan OP. What if the company just let's you walk? Are you prepared to do that?
