Only part I didn't follow was to add a new mask, and that's because after I selected inverse and when to add layer mask it wouldn't allow me to do that.

Gotta use the Background Eraser Tool. Right-click on the eraser icon and it should be there. I use CS6 so I can't be sure

I don't know about masks and all that, I just crop around it then erase the background
