I appreciate the honesty. Of course, I am on the complete opposite side of this assessment. I've heard others say this about Grief Pedigree and The Night's Gambit's production. I'll so far as to say that this production has the most "traditional" bounce of his new works, Iron Works notwithstanding. I agree with you about "Peace Akhi" and especially "Vessel". Honestly "Vessel" is a perfect song in his catalog. These beats barely exist. No bounce or flavor. Ka might as well be doing spoken word. And it's not about the sparse drums, because that's just Ka's style. Records like "Peace Ahki" and "Vessel" were adventures. "Years" is pretty dope, but the EP is pedestrian in my opinion. The most memorable parts were the Barry White quotes. I respect the artistry, but this is a chore to listen to.
Outside of the intro and Fall Of The Bronze Age, the EP is 3 for 3. The instrumental alone for "Still Heir" let me know that something new was on the horizon. What are your thoughts on Iron Works since that had the most different production in his discography? That's my favorite Ka album although I don't know many who share that opinion. I won't front, this comment had thrown me for a loop, LOL.
Your candor is refreshing. So I'll give you the toss up. Grief Pedigree or The Night's Gambit? My pick is...I never cared for Iron Works. I discovered Ka on Gza's Protools album, and didn't seek out Iron Works until after Grief Pedigree was released. Honestly, I found it underwhelming for a lot of the same reasons as 1200 B.C. (though, I think Ka has improved greatly as a rapper since then). I can hear the genius, but it doesn't move me like Grief Pedigree and The Night's Gambit.
