Humans as a collective have had ample time to prevent all of this. Scientist warned us decades ago about the impact of global warming. We allowed fossil fuel industry to spread misinformation. We've allowed our politicians to basically be stooges for this industry and block any significant progress in the fight against global warming.
And now here we are in 2020. COVID 19 should be a wake up call that our society isn't built to withstand huge challenges. And if you think this pandemic is bad - how do you think we'll withstand against ancient viruses for which we have absolutely no knowlege of? How will we withstand global food shortages due to widespread droughts? How will we withstand the mass movement of climate refugees escaping hunger and areas of the world that are either too hot to live in or that have been swallowed by rising seas?
COVID 19 is golden opportunity to build a more viable world and society, yet once again our elected officials are bailing out industries that contribute to the problem (airline industry, cruises etc). We have a maniac in office who denies climate change exists. And our only hope is replacing him with a senile old man who'll implement half measures. People need to really fathom the dire situation we're in as a species. Unless there is some magical technology in the works or masses of people rise up and remove elites from power, we're fukked.

Exactly. 99% of all species that ever existed are now extinct. The world will never end - just our lives. The difference is man's self-delusion and thinking that he's above life and nature.

I would say not necessarily. There are various plans to drill for oil and whatnot in the Artic region, as well as those waiting for the glaciers to melt to open new communication routes up there. Some of these viruses may be able to spread through air I guess. But also these regions is much more than just the Artic and Antartica, it's wide regions of Canada, Scandinavia and Russia, where people live and/or you have economic activities and/or animals who can catch a virus and spread it. It already happened a couple years ago :
