Panthers' Smith rips Sanchez

Mark Sanchez spent a good chunk of 2012 getting booed by the home crowd. Now, he's getting dissed by people who aren't even on his team.
While guest co-hosting for a Charlotte radio station on Wednesday, Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith ripped the beleaguered Jets QB, saying: "He sucks. I wouldn't let Mark Sanchez throw me a paper-bag sandwich."
Sanchez -- who helped lead the Jets to back-to-back AFC title appearances in 2009 and 2010 -- will have to compete for the starting job as a fifth-year QB. But his road to the starting lineup just got a little easier now that David Garrard is out of the equation. That leaves rookie Geno Smith (along with Greg McElroy and UDFA Matt Simms) as Sanchez's main competition.
While Sanchez carries a hefty $8.25-million price tag this season, Garrard's impending retirement gives the former USC QB security because it's unclear whether Smith can digest, and effectively run, Marty Mornhinweg's offense.
