Panthers' Smith rips Sanchez
Published: May 16, 2013 10:53 AM
By Kimberley A. Martin

Mark Sanchez spent a good chunk of 2012 getting booed by the home crowd. Now, he's getting dissed by people who aren't even on his team.

While guest co-hosting for a Charlotte radio station on Wednesday, Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith ripped the beleaguered Jets QB, saying: "He sucks. I wouldn't let Mark Sanchez throw me a paper-bag sandwich."

Sanchez -- who helped lead the Jets to back-to-back AFC title appearances in 2009 and 2010 -- will have to compete for the starting job as a fifth-year QB. But his road to the starting lineup just got a little easier now that David Garrard is out of the equation. That leaves rookie Geno Smith (along with Greg McElroy and UDFA Matt Simms) as Sanchez's main competition.

While Sanchez carries a hefty $8.25-million price tag this season, Garrard's impending retirement gives the former USC QB security because it's unclear whether Smith can digest, and effectively run, Marty Mornhinweg's offense.

Sanchez is never gunna rebound from the situation he and the Jets are in now. Even if he plays this year if the Jets don't retain Rex Ryan at the end of the season Sanchez is more than likely gone too. and the only way I see the Jets keeping Rex is a playoff bid.... and we all know that ain't happening.

Geno Smith struggling with placement. Deep ball needs work. Sanchez looks one if not two steps ahead.

Coples & Pace just broke thru inside of line & got all up in Sanchez's face immediately. Ready for this? Sanchez smartly threw it away

Sanchez looked pretty damn sharp in this set *ducks* #jets

Theyre not wearing pads. Reports are meaningless....just the first tweets fired off about the QB's were hysterical...

Every practice counts, so you think Geno gonna turn into a star with pads on :heh:

If it was other way around you be happy but Sanchez doing his thing.

Ivory with a nice spin move on David Harris, caused the linebacker to fall. #nyj :obama:

We're not going anywhere with the worst QB in the NFL, so lets pray to god Geno is better than him.

Sanchez intercepted by NT Damon Harrison on a screen. One play later, Sanchez picked by Jarrett on poor throw to Kerley on deep seam. #Jets

Practice wrapping up: Sanchez finishes 6-11, 3 INTs in 15 snaps. Geno Smith finishes 3-10, INT in 14 snaps. Both "sacked" once #nyj

Geno Smith going to Roc Nation, too. :leon:

A few weeks after Geno Smith fired his agent after he slipped out of the first round, the Jets rookie quarterback announced that he will hire Jay-Z’s Roc Nation Sports. Smith interviewed a few established agents before going with Jay-Z’s company.

Although that Smith said that Jay’s played “not that big of a role” in his decision, it strikes to reason that the marketing lure of high-profile entertainer made a significant impact on the quarterback.

“I think it’s just his agency,” Smith said on Wednesday. “When you talk about being in New York from a standpoint of what they can do in the city, the connections that they have, I think it’s a good move. My mother and my family were comfortable with it. I’m comfortable with it.”

“I’m just going to move on from there,” Smith added. “It’s not going to be a big deal and just remain humble and keep focusing on football.”

Smith’s contract agent will be Kim Miale, who represents no other players that are currently on any roster. (She represents two players that are not affiliated with any teams at this point).

Smith maintained that creating a marketable image is “not that important to me honestly.”

“The only thing that’s important to be is the image that is perceived around this lockerroom, the guy that I am to my teammates, to my coaches and the work that I put in on the football field,” Smith said. “I’m all about football. I’m all about getting better and that’s the one thing that I’m focused on: Better myself daily and prepare myself to be there when the time comes.”

“I don’t worry about the outside world’s perception,” Smith added. “I’m comfortable with who I am, strong in my faith. I know that this isn’t because of an image thing or trying to market myself. It’s just being comfortable with the guys who’s going to represent me. That’s ultimately why I made that decision.”
