Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos defended his innocence in a slightly heated media scrum as he entered the state Capitol Tuesday afternoon.
“The very simple reason is I’m innocent,” the Long Island Republican, who
was arrested Monday, said of why he is remaining as majority leader of the Senate. “If you’re innocent, there’s nothing that you have to run away from or hide from. Our conference believes that I’m innocent, I know that I’m innocent, and we’re ready to govern, that’s what it’s about.”
The embattled senator and his son Adam turned themselves in to federal authorities Monday morning as a criminal complaint
accusing them of bribery, extortion and other crimes was leveled against them. The elder Skelos later appeared in Albany to meet with his fellow Senate Republicans, who
placed their faith in his continued leadership.
Some Republicans
seemed wary about continuing to support him as leader prior to a conference meeting Monday night. Skelos charged that some GOPers “have nothing to do but complain because they can’t do anything else.”
Even though some Republicans had and may still have their trepidations, one GOP senator told the Times Union Tuesday that he fully supports Skelos and there remains a strong consensus of support among the conference members for him to remain as leader.
“I know him. He has been a man of honor — a very fine man,” state Sen. Hugh Farley, R-Schenectady, said.
As for the support of Skelos’ constituents in his Nassau County district, he says it remains.
“I have never received more positive comments from people in my district as I have today,” Skelos said. “They know me, they know I’m honest and they know I’ve served them well.”
