Rey Mysterio's current contract expires in a couple months, and a new report by The Wrestling Observer suggests there's at least a chance WWE will not re-sign the former world champion.
Generally, in years past, WWE would have already had a new deal done for major stars they are eager to re-sign. At the very least, they would be aggressively working on a new deal. However, The Observer is saying WWE officials aren't being very proactive with re-signing Mysterio this time around.
Rey Mysterio is considered a double-edged sword at this point in his career. While he is still a top merchandise seller and a great athlete, he has had trouble staying healthy. Since his last return, he hasn't been positioned in any prominent storylines either. That could simply be a case of WWE not needing him in top storylines, but could also be a direct result of Mysterio's injury risks.
There is still a very good chance WWE will re-sign Rey Mysterio when this is all said and done, but this is one of the first times WWE seems to be considering the option of letting him go.
The Observer report also mentions that many people believe Mysterio would join the AAA promotion if he were to ever leave WWE as opposed to simply retiring and putting his wrestling days behind him.
