On March 31, 2009 two Liberian men were killed in a Long Island condominium owned by Vilma. Police believe that the victims may have been part of a black money scam, where the perpetrators claim that cash smuggled from overseas—stained black to avoid detection—can be purchased at a discount; in reality, what they offer is a trunk full of worthless paper. Vilma is not considered a suspect.
He can have it lifted while the process plays out though. They would have no reason to even consider offering him a reduction if the suspension would be held up throughout the court process.

Ya they do have a reason to offer him a reduced suspension: to make the civil suit go away, since they have nothing on him.
The court can't make them lift the suspension, cuz the players agreed to to waive the right to sue the league for the punishments they levy. Hell, if they somehow fastracked the case and Vilma won, he'd still have serve the suspension (unless they agreed to lift it).
If he would have to serve during the case and the case would likely take more than a year it wouldn't make the NFL any difference because he'd already have served the suspension by the time the ruling was made. The court has the power to lift the shyt, they lifted the lockout remember? Only reason the lockout went on is because another court upheld it.

The players were specifically suing to stop the lockout...that's why the it was temporarily lifted.
The judge who heard Vilma's case won't be assessing the fairness of the suspension.
And I already explained why they're entertaining reducing the suspension in exchange for Vilma dropping the lawsuit.
If the civil suit was an issue they coulda been tried to work something out. Doesn't make sense to do it now especially when the case will likely proceed through the life of the suspension. I don't claim to be a legal scholar I just don't think that makes sense. I also remember hearing on ESPN the other day from some legal expert that the suspension would be lifted if Vilma's suit when to trial.
I honestly can't say for sure one way or the other. I hope its' true though and I hope Vilma sons the Emporer in court.
