Being landlocked by multiple players on the line of scrimmage rules them out from being able to catch passes downfield. So it just prevents the offense from being able to pull a fast one when everyone else is covered. In practice you’re right it’s usually just a drifting lineman that looks lostI’ve never actually understood why the illegal man downfield rule exists
What from a gameplay standpoint does it prevent? Is it a safety thing? ..most the time when it’s called..it’s just a lineman just standing around not involved in anything
