Don't Believe the Hype

Pro football is the most popular sport in America for at least the 30th straight year.

That's according to a survey taken this month by the Harris Poll, which has been asking adult fans, ages 18 and over, about their favorite sport since 1985.

In 2014, 35 percent of fans call the NFL their favorite sport, followed by Major League Baseball (14 percent), college football (11 percent), auto racing (7 percent), the NBA (6 percent), the NHL (5 percent) and college basketball (3 percent).

In 1985, the first year the poll was taken, the NFL bested MLB by just one percentage point (24 to 23 percent), but since then interest in baseball has fallen while the NFL has experienced a huge rise in popularity.

Nine percent fewer fans call baseball their favorite sport over the 30-year span, the biggest drop of any sport. The polling numbers suggest that the sport hasn't been able to recover from a popularity standpoint from 1994, when a strike forced the cancellation of the World Series.

One other significant drop was in professional golf. Throughout Tiger Woods' pro career, which began in 1996, no less four percent of the U.S. adult population called golf their favorite sport. But since 2010, the first year after Woods' extramarital affair scandal, only two percent of Americans have called it their favorite sport.

A sport's popularity varies greatly based on demographics. More people who live in rural areas on the East coast say they're fans of the NFL than the general U.S. population. Those with an annual household income of more than $100,000 are more likely to be baseball fans, while African Americans are less likely to enjoy the sport, the poll reveals. More southerners call college football their favorite sport, while those with a high school education or less tend to gravitate to auto racing.

mlb 2nd......but according to this forum its boring & nobody likes it

It is dying. The average MLB fan age is like 54 and only baby boomers like it. In 20 years, the sport will be irrelevent barring a major change of PR strategy

http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702303843104579167812218839786
The average 2013 World Series viewer this year is 54.4 years old, according to Nielsen, the media research firm. The trend line is heading north: The average age was 49.9 in 2009. Kids age 6 to 17 represented just 4.3% of the average audience for the American and National League Championship Series this year, compared with 7.4% a decade ago.

Kids accounted for 9.4% of the NBA conference finals audience this year, compared with 10.6% a decade ago. They represented 9% of the NHL conference-finals audience in the spring. For Premier League soccer on the NBC Sports Network, kids are accounting for 11% of the audience.

In addition, MLB fans only watch THEIR team. NFL/NBA/NCAA Football-Basketball fans will watch any good game thats on.

I don't buy it, but I'm biased being both black and young.

I would say it's NFL>>>>NBA>>>>>>>>>MLB>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>NHL

Usually what ESPN pays the most attention to is what's the hottest, and the NBA gets ways more love and attention than Baseball.

And I'm not even sure if NHL is ahead of Tennis these days in American popularity. If it is, it's probably closer than we might think.

yep, because we really know whats gonna happen in 20 years right breh
baseball will never be fully irrelevant or dead

Dog, the average age of the NFL = 42, NBA = 36. That's a 18yr difference. And the numbers will continue to lower while MLB fans age and die.

I'm 21. Don't nobody care about the WS. Cats my age would rather watch NHL, and I'm bein 100 wit u.

How do you know if it will ever be dead when you just implied we don't know what's going to happen in the next 20 years?

And also, why do you come off as so bitter and miserable all the time? No shade, just genuinely curious. You're one of the most negative and dreary people I've ever encountered on an internet forum.

I didn't know this was the case for most in general, but that's how it's been for me. I'll watch all the Red Sox games, but if they're not playing I could care less unless it's the playoffs.

I genuinely love basketball and football so much that I will still enjoy a game if my squads aren't playing. MLB is a distant 3rd for me, even though I love my Sox. I think I love the Red Sox more than I love baseball, as weird as that sounds.
