The bye week is an incentive for the top teams to keep their players playing so they can secure one of the top two spots.
@ the potential of a team w/ a losing regular season record winning the super bowlthe incentive for a team to get those bye weeks are a great thing, this is a bad idea imo.
Bye weeks are great for the league....it adds to the excitement of the late season playoff push.
No other league has a greater incentive to rest players for "meaningless" games...once teams clinch, you'll see more Popovich type moves, where coaches will hold players out games choosing health over jockeying for playoff positioning.
I hate this idea.

NFL is the only sport where most player have never been to the playoffs
Look at spikes. Dude been in the nfl for 13 years and never sniffed the playoffs
Baseball even with the new expansion has a lower percentage of teams in the playoffs. That isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's actually a good thing. Everybody shouldnt' make the playoffs. The playoffs should mean something and be special. You should have to earn your way in. Every squad that gets in should have a realistic shot at the title.worst commish in sports
i hate to see what the NFL is gonna look like in 5 years

i dont like goodell but lets not act as if there werent talks of expanding the playoffs to 16 teams around this time 10 years ago.
it was gonna happen eventually. and im not mad. its not like the ncaa thinking about expanding the tournament to 96 teams or anything like that.

at that too). Teams would still be striving to win just like they are now. However if you put half the teams in the playoffs in the NFL the product is sure to suffer. Top teams in the NFL will start doing like top teams in the NBA have done and pretty much operate under a "fukk it we are in" mentality after they get to 10 wins. Beyond that you will have 8-8 and 7-9 teams in every year. You can't compare football to other sports because physical toll and health play so much more of a role than in any other sport.So... I'm the only one who likes this?
I love the sport.. and other than making them play 18 games which I am not down with.. this is the best idea... It ain't like we don't want to see RGIII and the Bengals make it

I Kinda like that aspect of it but I think back to one of the main reasons I like the NFL and that is because every game feels like it means something due to only having abuot 33% of the field make the playoffs unlike basketball, hockey, baseball where games do not matter as much because nearly half the field makes the playoffs. I listened to NFL Exec, Bill Polian, talk about it and he made some good points about it actually making the league more competitive in the end of the year because teams will be battling it out for those last playoff spots. I still think we need to keep it as it is, I don't want to see the playoffs watered down and have a 7-9 team make a run in the playoffs
Edit:
Here is Bill talking about it
NFL to discuss expanding playoff field, Roger Goodell says - ESPN
This is bullshyt
There'll be teams competing for the last playoff spots regardless of the number of playoff spots. All this changes is that it lowers the caliber of teams that'll be competing for those final spots.
