NFL playoffs: Ranking the quarterbacks

49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has reached the NFC championship twice in as many seasons as a starter. But how does he rank against the other three QBs playing this weekend? (David T. Foster III/Charlotte Observer/MCT)

The NFL's final four—Patriots vs. Broncos, 49ers vs. Seahawks—is pretty much what most people expected it to be back in August. The two winners will be coming to North Jersey for Super Bowl XLVIII. And the arrival of conference championship Sunday calls for some rankings. So let's get do some rankin'.

First up: The quarterbacks

4. Colin Kaerpernick, 49ers (2013 regular-season QBR: 68.6)
All Kaepernick does is win. He's 21-7 as a starter, including 4-1 in the postseason, with three of those playoff victories coming on the road. His QBR in the 2013 regular season was better than Tom Brady's and Russell Wilson's, his quarterback rating was better than Brady's, and per Football Outsiders, he ranked slightly ahead of Wilson in both DYAR and DVOA. So why is Kaepernick ranked fourth out of the final four? Accuracy. According to Pro Football Focus, Kaepernick's accuracy percentage (69.3) ranked 23rd in the league among QBs who took 50 percent of their team's snaps. And his accuracy percentage when pressured was just 55.1—tied with Matt Schaub for lowest in the NFL. Kaepernick's completion percentage (58.4) also ranked near the bottom of the league.

3. Russell Wilson, Seahawks (2013 regular-season QBR: 58.9)
Wilson is now 26-9 as a starter (playoffs included), and while his 2013 Total QBR ranked 13th in the league, his Pro Football Focus QB rating—which brings drops, throwaways, spikes, and what receivers do after the catch into the equation—was fifth-best in the NFL, ahead of even Brady. Wilson is also the most accurate QB in the league on deep passes (48.3 percent). He does get plenty of help: Per PFF, Wilson's receivers dropped just 14 passes during the regular season, and he's getting more time than anyone (average of 3.18 seconds) to throw.

2. Tom Brady, Patriots (2013 regular-season QBR: 61.1)
The biggest reason Brady's ranked ahead of Kaepernick and Wilson here is because he's been doing it for far longer. Brady's 2013 numbers are lower than in recent years, but consider: He lost Wes Welker, Danny Amendola, Brandon Lloyd, and Aaron Hernandez, and only had Rob Gronkowski for a short time. Brady's receivers dropped more of his passes than any QB except Matt Stafford, which explains why the Pats whipped out the 1960s-era power football last week against the Colts. Yeah, yeah, Brady's got three Super Bowl rings and Peyton Manning has just one. Yeah, yeah, Brady's Pats are 2-1 against Manning in the Playoffs. But Brady hasn't won the big game in the last nine years, during which time he's gone 0-2 in the Super Bowl while Manning has been 1-1.
1. Peyton Manning, Broncos (2013 regular-season QBR: 82.9)
Manning set all sorts of records in 2013, and by any objective measure he was the best in the league. Football Outsiders ranked him No. 1 in DYAR and DVOA, only Nick Foles had a better PFF QB rating, and only Josh McCown had a superior QBR. Manning was accuarate on 69 percent of his throws when pressured (only Philip Rivers was better), and his QB rating when his time in the pocket was less than 2.5 seconds was a whopping 121.4. Yes, he's got a history of playoff failures, but what veteran QB in this league doesn't? Finally, the Pats went 11-5 without Brady in 2008, while the Colts in 2011 without Manning were a total disaster. Football's a total team game, but Manning may be the one guy whose presence tips the scales more than any other.

:aicmon:

Cacs are making route for San Fran now. I was indifferent about the playoffs before all these dumb ass articles and shiit.

This RW slander is dumb, as a QB, he executes what he needs to and keeps his side of the ball in position to win. He extends plays, makes mind blowing throws on the run, doesn't turn the ball over, and is pretty good under pressure...pretty much the shyt your supposed to do, who cares that he doesn't pass for 400 yards a game

Kaep > Russ in the playoffs. He should be ahead of him. I like Russ and think he's good but he's severely overrated.

Kaeps played two games though. Wilson didnt have to do much against the Saints as Lynch ran wild. I expect the Niners to contain him though so we'll see Wilson in some must pass situations. Biggest game of his career so far indeed.

Kaep has played 5 playoff games. Not hating on Wilson but folk shytted on Kaep this season for his low numbers ignoring the fact that the 9ers were running the ball down teams throats in most of the games last year. That was used as a knock on Kaep but not a knock on Russ.
