Ex-Michigan running back Leroy Hoard struggling with mental, physical toll of 10-year NFL career

Ex-Michigan running back Leroy Hoard struggling with mental, physical toll of 10-year NFL career

By Pete Cunningham Sports Director

Ex-Michigan fullback Leroy Hoard was a bruising runner when he played for the Wolverines from 1987-89 and during his 10-year NFL career. But after all those years of abusing would-be tacklers, now it's Hoard who is feeing the pain from all of those hits.

Hoard recently told ESPN about the physical and mental toll the game has played on him on the Sunday morning show "Outside the Lines." One of the ailments Hoard suffers is memory loss, so he keeps a notepad handy to write down things he fears he may forget.

Hoard battles emotional demons as well, and to combat his struggles, writes the names of former NFL players Junior Seau, Andre Waters and Dave Duerson on the inside of every one of his notebooks. All three former players suffered brain trauma during their NFL careers from repeated blows to the head and all three committed suicide by shooting themselves.

"I don't know why I wasn't one of them. I worry all the time, like, 'how close was I to that?'" Hoard told Outside the Lines.

So he ran 30 yards successfully but the only way to finish off the run is to lower his head?

:upsetfavre:

Maybe he wanted to get a few more yards or thought he could truck the final defender and take it for a TD.

That's not unheard of.

To be honest, this rule is only being looked at b/c of that play in that Pats/Ravens game where the Pats RB put his head down and got hit by Pollard, after which the RB went down like he'd been shot

slowly but surely Goodell is going to kill the NFL, all while thinking that the league is completely invincible.

Rules committee: No more lowering the boom

I think it's only fair. What applies to offense should apply to the defense too to some degree.

Now if only they would let people hit QBs just like anyone else it will be a completely even playing field.

Be fair: Either you hit every one or you hit noone. If the b!tch (QB) got pads on like the next guy i should be able to hit him just like the next guy.

Im all for player safety but sometimes to much is to much. Football is an impact contact sport. Collisions are going to happen and injuries will occur. These players know this when they sign up for the game. So what will they try to get rid of next. The stiff arm? Chip blocking by the running back or something else?

Just pass the ball and avoid all these problems

:smugfavre:

That is basically what they are gonna force teams to do and that's what I think they want to happen.

I remember making a thread about this a while back that they want to de-emphasize the run and emphasize the pass in an effort to have fewer players where almost everyone is concentrated and headed towards the same point on the field. It will be interesting if someone tracks the rates of injuries and the average length that injured guys are out.

here's that thread

Again, I ask you how is it that he was able to run 30 yards, but miracoulously in order to get a "few more yards" he must lower his head. Not sure if you played any organized sports, but this does not make any sense at all? Apparently the defender/s failed for 30 yards(enough for 3 first downs) so lower the "boom" makes sense?

Not sure if you are :umad: or not ........
why the fukk would I be mad ?

you on other hand are either trollin or fail to understand what lowering your shyt accomplishes in football, as well as physics in what happens to your body on a collision

lowering your head makes you 1) much harder to tackle 2)brace for the impact of contact better, keeping your head from snapping back

as result of this, lowering your head and leading with the helmet enables you to both pick up extra yards and ensure better safety

its been like that forever. look at smaller guys like mjd and gore and how they get short yardage. now look how bigger backs dont ever run upright and have to lower their shyt to generate more momentum and concentrate all the force in less area

Fair is subjective.

There's 11 defenders chasing after 1 guy with the ball. The guy with the ball is vulnerable b/c he can't see everyone who's coming at him nor can he do much about it......unless he can put his head down and run over them.

like emmitt said, most backs cant run without lowering their heads. its natural as hell and protects them...I dont see how anyone who played a RB can say otherwise.
