The defender was probably trying to separate him from the football. Plus things happen so fast when you're playing. You usually don't have time to think that long. Just react.

Brotha, we see plays where fwd progress is stopped and lineman pick ball carriers up or push them for another 2-4 yards. Whistles don’t get blown then and no one utters a word.

If someone comes in and smokes the guy while he's being stood up then people should say something. That they dont is merely a personal failing.
This injury is due to dirty play, not Smith's weight. It doesn't matter how big you are, getting speared above shoulder level like that when you can't protect yourself is a recipe for disaster.
