How does boxing prevent from being sued? Is it in their liscenses? NFL should go the same route for the future.
:what: :wtf: there's something called getting knocked out in the boxing. and it takes about 3-5 months minimum b4 their next fight. Enough time to recover. In NFL, players used to get concussions and either come back that same game or the following week. And notice i didn't go into NFL having a union and a CBA :ufdup:

TYRONE GA!
When the players found out about that cat the NFL was paying a former player from the early 90s who sued them for concussions, you knew it was a wrap.

Nah that's all included in the $765 million. These former players ain't cashing out based on this ruling brehs :heh:

:whoa:

So all they're getting is a check for 170k, no extra perks or benefits......Their lawyers must have been hired by the NFL too.....:laugh:

That 765 mil is probably just the interest that made off revenue over the last 18 months...

Former NFL players involved in this case were NEVER getting a $170K check to begin with. Read the article I posted on the first page, this $765 million incudes research, medical care AND compensation. Players will get compensated, but all the players injuries aren't the same so their compensation won't be the same either

NFL made out like bandits in this deal

Man the NFL made out like bandits :wow:

The NFL probably clears $10 Billion a year these days. $765 mil is a slap on the wrist.

I wish it would've been no less than $2 billion dollars

@jadillac
that 175K per player dont mean shyt. They will be back to square 1 again once most of that money is spent on medical fees.

The correlation between NFL revenue and what you think this settlement should have paid out doesnt connect.

lol @ mel gibsons divorce settlement being only 300 mil less than what the NFL settled here for. if this is the tiddlywinks amount that decades of NFL violence costs the league, why the fukk do they even care about player safety?

Highlights of the Deal from Florio..

We’ve had a chance to read and to digest the terms of the settlement announced Thursday in the ongoing concussion litigation. The most important things to know are listed below.

1. The settlement applies to all players who are retired as of the day Judge Anita Brody gives preliminary approval to the settlement.

2. The settlement will be subject to a formal approval process, with retired players having the opportunity to oppose the settlement and/or to “opt out” and file or continue to pursue their own claims.

3. The $765 million payment by the NFL does not include attorneys’ fees, which will be determined separately.

4. Of the settlement amount, $675 million will be available for retired players “who present medical evidence of severe cognitive impairment, dementia, Alzheimer’s, ALS, or to their families.” The compensation for each player will be based on his diagnosis, his age, the length of his NFL career, and other factors. The decisions as to compensation will be made by independent doctors working with settlement administrators appointed by the court.

5. If the $675 million is exhausted, the NFL will make a one-time additional payment of up to $37.5 million.

6. Of the settlement amount, a maximum of $75 million will be used for baseline medical exams of retired players.

7. Of the settlement amount, $10 million will go to a separate research and education fund.

8. Of the settlement amount, $6 million will be devoted to administrative costs.

9. The settlement will have no impact on benefits provided under the labor deal between the NFL and the NFLPA.

10. The settlement will have no impact on the rights of current players.

Terms from PFT..

The following terms of the NFL’s concussion lawsuit settlement were distributed by former United States District Judge Layn Phillips, the mediator in the case.

Class Settlement – The settlement will include all players who have retired as of the date on which the Court grants preliminary approval to the settlement agreement, their authorized representatives, or family members (in the case of a former player who is deceased).

No Admissions of Liability or Weakness of Claims – The settlement does not represent, and cannot be considered, an admission by the NFL of liability, or an admission that plaintiffs’ injuries were caused by football. Nor is it an acknowledgementby the plaintiffs of any deficiency in their case. Instead, it represents a decision by both sides to compromise their claims and defenses, and to devote their resources to benefit retired players and their families, rather than litigate these cases.

Payments – The NFL and NFL Properties will make payments in connection with the settlement as follows:

  1. Baseline medical exams, the cost of which will be capped at $75 million;
  2. A separate fund of $675 million to compensate former players who have suffered cognitive injury or their families;
  3. A separate research and education fund of $10 million;
  4. The costs of notice to the members of the class, which will not exceed $4 million;
  5. $2 million, representing one-half of the compensation of the Settlement Administrator for a period of 20 years; and
  6. Legal fees and litigation expenses to the plaintiffs’ counsel, which amounts will be set by the District Court.
Timing of Payments – If the agreement receives preliminary approval from the District Court, the NFL will pay the costs of preparing and distributing notice to the class members (up to $4 million). If the settlement receives final approval, and any appeals have been concluded, the NFL will pay approximately 50 percent of the settlement amount over three years, and the balance over the next 17 years.

Baseline Medical Examinations – Eligible retired players may receive a Baseline Medical Assessment, the results of which will be used to establish a qualifying diagnosis, either now or at a point in the future. The baseline examination program will operate for a period of 10 years. After 10 years, any funds allocated for this program that have not been spent will be added to the fund for payment of monetary awards.

Injury Compensation Fund – The fund of at least $675 million will be available to pay monetary awards to retired players who present medical evidence of severe cognitive impairment, dementia, Alzheimer’s, ALS, or to their families. The precise amount of compensation will be based upon the specific diagnosis, as well as other factors including age, number of seasons played in the NFL, and other relevant medical conditions. These determinations will be made by independent doctors working with settlement administrators appointed by the District Court.

If a retired player’s condition worsens over time, he may apply for a supplemental payment.

In the event the Injury Compensation Fund ultimately is deemed insufficient to pay all approved claims, the Settlement Administrator will make a recommendation to the Court that the NFL make an additional, one-time contribution to the Injury Compensation Fund up to a maximum amount of $37.5 million.

Research and Education Fund – The NFL will allocate $10 million toward medical, safety, and injury-prevention research, and toward educating retired players on NFL benefits programs. A portion of this fund will be used to support joint efforts by the NFL and retired NFL players to promote education and safety initiatives in youth football.

Other Benefits – No retired player will forfeit or become ineligible for any other benefits provided by the current Collective Bargaining Agreement between the NFL and the NFL Players Association.

Schedule for Further Activity – The parties will prepare and file complete agreements with Judge Brody in Philadelphia, who will then schedule a hearing to consider whether to grant preliminary approval to the settlement. Assuming preliminary approval is granted, the Judge will direct that notice be given to the retired players and will schedule a hearing to consider whether to grant final approval to the settlement.
