If they are, they're nuts.
not sure i agree. it depends at what price. Don't get me wrong, he's far from a bum. he puts in work and effort, does what he's asked to do, etc. Some people would question whether or not he fits in oveall in the big scheme of things. small center who has great chemestry with Pacio but it seems like you take out Pacio and he's so-so. If they have cap space to get a bigger center with the same level of skill...I just don't see him as a "first line" center. I know the lines rank doesn't matter as much this year but the way i see it, i don't see him on a 4th line, his role in a first line is shaky (depends too much on Pacio imo) and they already have Chuckie, Plek, Eller, plus maybe other centers in the AHL?

like i said, it's not his work ethic i question or his dedication. just how much they need him and what are the other options besides signing him, what price should they pay, etc...

Don't forget that Galchenyuk is a natural C. He'll eventually play there...

Imo, they'll have to chose between Desharnais and Plekanec if they can get a big C like Getzlaf for example...

I don't think they have the money to go after either Perry nor Getzlaf. Don't forget the cap goes down next year, and they still have to sign Desharnais.

Kaberle - buy out
Gomez - no longer on the books
Cole traded for Ryder...Ryder's UFA - no longer on the books
DD - traded

There's mad room.

Calgary Flames offer sheet Ryan O'Reilly as per Darren Dreger of TSN
Flames sign Avs' O'Reilly to two-year, $10M offer-sheet

The offer sheet carries an average annual value of $5 million. O'Reilly will make $1 million in base salary for 2012-13 with a signing bonus worth $2.5 million. His 2013-14 salary will be $6.5 million.

Should the Avalanche choose not to match the offer-sheet they would receive Calgary's first- and third-round choices at the 2013 NHL Draft.

Avs should let him go, Calgary's pick is most likely gonna be pretty high :manny:

Ryan O'Reilly is a terrific two way player, and I think every fan would take him on their team in a heartbeat, but that's a lot of money for a guy who hasn't proven to be a top scorer, don't ya think?

Ottawa ran into a similar issue a few years back with Mike Fisher making more than $4 mil a season. Loved him on the team but that's too much for a guy that doesn't get on the score sheet all the time.

If Calgary finishes the year in the bottom of the league, and their first rounder is a top 5 pick, this could be Phil Kessel-Tyler Seguin all over again.

This draft is deep as hell too. The Flames better hope ROR can keep up his offensive production from last year.

Baerstchi - O'Reilly - Iginla looks like a pretty nice line though. Can't wait to try it on NHL 13.

I wonder if they wouldn't have been better off waiting until the summer, though I guess that assumes that he would still be unsigned by then.

But you're getting him for a little more than 20 games this year unless you make the playoffs, which I don't see, next year, and then that's it.

I don't think Calgary has any idea what they're doing to be honest.

They need to trade JBouw, Iginla, and Kiprusoff for young talent and picks so that they can have a nice young nucleus to grow with O'Reilly, Brodie, and Baertschi. It's time for them to face facts and realize this team ain't built to win now.

I don't disagree, but if thats what they thought, wouldn't they try and sign him for more years? I just don't get what they're doing there.

Calgary has had an identity crisis for the past 3 or 4 seasons. Not good enough to be a playoff team, but not bad enough to draft high. They have spent a shyt ton of $ since the last lockout and have nothing to show for it. No playoff runs, not bluechip prospects.
