All jokes aside, while I hate everything these #content people stand for you can't say this is journalism. It's the equivalent of when movie stars or music artists would go on Nickelodeon to do promotion for a new movie/album in the 90s or 00s. A better argument for Wilson's point would be that this type of stuff is being prioritized over journalism. Sitting down and having fun with Kai or Speed is more valuable to the label than sitting down with a radio show or journalist. And while that sucks it's worth noting that these journalists spent the last decade prioritizing clickbait bullshyt and antagonizing artists with invasive shyt, to the point that artists simply stopped engaging. We've all seen Breakfast Club interviews where CTG disrespected somebody, or Yee asked inappropriate personal questions. I'm not going to blame artists for not wanting to engage with that anymore. The sad thing is that the actual journalists like Wilson get sidelined as well.

Think about how when black artists want to do a "serious" interview they run to Zane Lowe at Apple. That sucks to me. But at the same time, who are the black journalists or personalities who aren't on that gossip bullshyt? Sway comes to mind. Some would say Ebro but he spends so much time saying insane shyt on Hot 97 that I wouldn't count him. Big Boy in LA, and Letty in LA as well. Eh...that's about it.

Back in the day, magazines like Rap Pages, Stress, and Blaze definitely covered the culture the way it was supposed to be covered. They didn't do any sensationalism nonsense, or favor the bigger artists. They were all about the culture as a whole. So deejaying, emceeing, graff and b-boying would all be in there. They weren't f*cked up by payola and the record labels, so they could speak on sh*t impartially.

The other magazines got caught up in taking checks from labels and started letting them dictate the coverage and even the reviews. Same thing happened to Hip Hop radio. So all of the outlets that started taking money got weird. There used to be mad options, but the machine started pushing those other publications out one by one.
