Thomas Sankara renamed the Republic of Upper Volta Burkina Faso by taking the word "Burkina" from Mossi and "Faso" from Dioula -> Burkina Faso = the Land of the Honest Men.

Even though there are like 60 native languages spoken in the country, taking words from the main ones, those that almost everybody talk, to create one uniting title is pretty dope imo

I think that Sudan was a reference to anything in the Sahel. The French part was just the colonial territories that they stole.

I think that Mali actually means Manden. I seem to recall reading that Mali is the Berber or a Fulani translation of the word Manden, which is an ethnic group of people whose homelands were in the modern day Western Sahel. Other translations of Manden are Manding, Mande, Mandinka, Mandingo, etc., which just means people of or citizens of Manden. Centuries ago the Manden people left their homeland and spread out over a large area of West Africa. Now they are just referred to as Mande people and they have a lot of subgroups, but they are all related. Of course the Mande empires go back many, many centuries so they were never technically the French Sudan.

Unrelated question for the Nigerians on here but who are the Efik people sided with? Im asking because in Cuba the main Nigerian groups that people identify with are Yorubas and Efik but I read somewhere online that Efik/Ibibio are related to Igbos. Are they supportive of a UAR/Nigeria or does everybody in the south want their own autonomy for themselves?

Efik/ Ibibio is part of Biafra. Its Igbo, but when England and their bullshyt came, they called them South-South aka Rivers State to cause division between tribes because of oil. They told them Igbo people will dominate them, not knowing England and their puppets from the north have dominated them and polluted their water and environment...
