I just checked it out and I really don't see why you think they're the same. Wii in 1080p almost looks like a PS2 game compared to 8, and this is going by footage of both on youtube, so it's not like I played one via computer and judged the other merely by youtube footage. Check it out.

Nintendo has always been known for their philosophy of "gameplay over graphics". Now that they're getting to the point where they can finally merge stunning graphics with amazing gameplay, they have even more of an edge over Sony and Microsoft than they did before, as those two companies primarily strive for "cinematic" experiences that lack depth in their respective gameplay departments. Nintendo has never stopped caring about their hardcore audience, as they continue to prove with games like Mario Kart 8, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, etc, etc.
