Rumor: Nintendo to show new hardware at E3 - Yahoo News

The Electronic Entertainment Expo rumormill is starting to wind up, with talk of a new Nintendo console resurfacing not yet a year and a half after the Wii U's debut.

US site IGN fueled expectation of a new hardware announcement in the May 1 edition of its Nintendo Voice Chat podcast.

"They're absolutely going to show new hardware this year," said co-host Peer Schneider, after he and his co-hosts established an atmosphere of healthy skepticism. "I've heard it from someone who used to be at Nintendo, I've heard it from somebody on the third-party front."

No further detail was given on what exactly that new hardware might be -- console, controller, accessory or something else entirely.

UK sites corroborate

But British-based site VideoGamer chimed in with further source-led speculation originating from inside an unnamed game publisher.

"Nintendo will reveal new hardware at E3," wrote deputy news editor Dave Scammell. "Games compatible with the hardware will also be playable at the show," he continued, linking the rumor to a January chat about a refreshed handheld and home console duo, the Fusion DS and Fusion Terminal.

May 2 then saw UK trade news site MCV confirming "some sort of new [Nintendo] hardware at E3" was "the same thing that [MCV] has been told in recent days." Again, further details were not supplied and no connection made to the Fusion.

The original Fusion Terminal rumor had been met with suspicion in technical quarters, its supposed spec sheet viewed as being confused and contradictory.

Furthermore, superceding the Wii U with a vastly improved model so soon after launch might help it compete with the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and tablet gaming scene, but at the cost of snubbing loyal fans -- a dangerous gambit.

Clues from Nintendo's president

More likely, perhaps, is a project announced by Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata at his company's January 30 investors meeting.

Iwata closed his presentation with a section on Nintendo's long-term plan of creating "a new platform business" that "improves people's quality of life in enjoyable ways," taking the theme of health as its first step and investigating "'non-wearable' technology."

"I plan to announce more details within 2014," Iwata had said. "I then plan to talk about its specific features and a clearer vision of what we really mean by the term 'non-wearable.'"

Nintendo is to broadcast a livestreamed event from E3 at 9 a.m. PST on Tuesday, June 10.

Ain't trynna hear this bullshyt. We all know it'll be some gay ass accessory :camby: I'll just continue playing my Wii U
Hold up, hold up, hold up, brotha. What makes you so sure? With Wii U sales plummeting and now relying entirely on one upcoming game (Mario Kart), Nintendo probably realizes that the only way to keep up with Sony is to put out a system with more powerful hardware. For all we know, the Wii U might become the next Dreamcast. Great exclusives that will stand the test of time, but a total failure financially that will get canned early. All I know is, if Nintendo truly abandons the Wii U, it will be the last console I ever buy from them.

Fake and old.
They said they have no new hardware to show yesterday which means this is most likely a 3DS XL situation, where there's a revision to their current hardware. The guy who leaked this on twitter was even copping please just hours after he posted it online.

So you really think they would throw all that shyt into the Mario Kart bundle they announced earlier this week and offer a free game if you purchase MK8 if they were moving on? I doubt it.

Not gonna happen unless it's a peripheral like a VR headset or something. Or a new updated handheld

Well, others pointed out that it was sort of a desperate last move on their part since the future of the console's success lies entirely on this one game (until the Winter), so it had me wondering for a little bit.

Anything is possible. :yeshrug: I actually thought it was weird that they shot it down since Nintendo NEVER responds to these things.
