That's true, the other side of the coin is that he was grammy nominated while still being alive and the album debuted #4 on the Billboard charts. He did 56,000 first week and the album sold 160,000+ units by the end of 2018 with zero radio hits. For comparison, the only other West Coast rapper who sold 56,000 first week that year was YG (Stay Dangerous), who debuted at #5 on the Billboard charts, and that was off the strength of "Big Bank" featuring Nicki Minaj and Big Sean. Nipsey was the hottest in the streets here by a mile.

The "regional" rapper y'all are thinking of in that timeframe is 03 Greedo, THAT is regional. Nipsey was doing more than what a regional rapper would do.

Nip my nikka and he bigger than regional but the Grammy nomination is cuz of Atlantic. Don’t act like breh was 100% independent breaking award show barriers

On what planet was Nipsey a very minor artist :wtf: lmao

He was a minor artist during the majority of his career. Nobody outside of Cali fukked with him at all until after his debut album dropped. It’s weird seeing people compare him to Tupac (Who already was nationally famous and had albums that sold very well before his death) even though Nipsey was ignored during half of his career.

Never said anything about being independent. What I was saying, which we agree on, is that he wasn't regional.

"Racks in the Middle" was a smash hit and, even before he died, within one month of that single being released, it had more than triple the amount of YouTube views as the next biggest song off of Victory Lap. Off the strength of that song and the grammy nomination alone, Victory Lap was on track to sell more units. Would it have gone gold? Maybe, maybe not. The fact is he was clearly on the edge of a major crossover. And before people say the single was big because of Roddy Ricch, The Box didn't drop until 10 months later and he was nowhere near being a household name of any sort at that point. It was a hot single and the type of record that was about to be a radio hit regardless of Nipsey's passing. Nipsey was poised to be a breakout artist in 2019 no matter what.

For reference, you'll never hear this regional talk said about a rapper like Freddie Gibbs in spite of the fact that he's NEVER sold a fraction of what Nipsey did while he was alive on any album, Alfredo, Bandana and Pinata included. They were both in the same XXL Freshmen class and their careers have lasted roughly the same amount of time. Freddie Gibbs, right now, does not have a single youtube video with as many views as what Racks in the Middle got in a month (11 million). Nipsey's viewcounts on his videos before Racks in the Middle were exactly the same as Gibbs's. Is Gibbs regional now too? Is he a very minor artist?

I agree with that, for the majority of his career he was minor. By the time Victory Lap dropped, he wasn't.

Bro you live in California. You need to ask around instead of acting like you know...

@Buckeye Fever do nikkas in Illinois fuvk with nip? Did you ever ONCE hear a fellow Midwesterner talk about him in real life before his death ?

And I ain't heard but one song from freddur gibbs. That definitely qualifies him as regional..

FYI I've lived everywhere. If ur ass ain't lived outside CA then shut the fukk up

Like anything else that depends on the circles you run in. My cousins around the country most definitely knew who Nipsey was by no later than 2015 but that's because the ones I talked to were up on rap to begin with.

The radio by itself isn't a barometer of being regional unless you're willing to say that anyone who doesn't have a smash radio single or three is regional. Curren$y and Joey Badass are two artists who never had nationwide radio play and never went gold either. Are they regional? Does your logic that "no one ever talked about them" hold up? You just called Freddie Gibbs regional and yet the idea that no one ever talked about him outside of the Midwest is easily proven wrong. Rap fans talked about all of the above and the same rap fans have also talked about Nipsey Hussle outside of LA before his death. The idea that he was only known in West Coast circles is total bullshyt, he had fans nationwide.
