bingo! I legit maybe heard/seen this guy a handful of times and no one was talking about him. Now everyone acts like he was the second coming. Tools tried to do the same bullshyt when Mac Dre died. WTF was Mac Dre? Every song I found by that guy was garbage, but nobody wanted to hear it.

It didn’t get back in the charts until he was murdered and the posthumous wave of popularity started.

Yes they were, I'm not saying he was a globally recognised superstar like some of these other posters

My only disagreement is that he was the biggest West Coast name before he passed...
Of his era/generation of rappers, both YG and Mozzy were there with him in notoriety, and Mozzy is the one at the time (pre-Nip's death) who truly blew up grassroots with little major backing...

Dudes who saying no one knew Nip outside of LA or Cali are bugging. I was in prison in 2009 on North Carolina when I first heard him. I got out and on subsequent trips back home I knew heads who were listening to him; I didn't really notice heads in VA and NC really catching his wave until Crenshaw (which is also when i really put him in rotation myself), and that was 2013 to early '14. After that, there was a gradual growing of his fan base in those places---->I wouldn't say he was a hugely popular guy in that area before his death, but the notion that no one listened to him or knew his music is fukking false...
Dudes gotta stop projecting their own opinions. He wasn't an international superstar and was just really starting to crack on a national stage, but he wasn't se nobody that people in different parts of the country didn't know...
I don't like the comps to Tupac but you could definitely make the argument that Nip's catalog is underrated...

My biggest problem is how Cardi B won that Grammy the year he was nominated. I was pushing for Daytona to win but I thought Astroworld would win. I heard Nipsey’s name a lot but never checked anything of his out until he died. Victory Lap could’ve and probably should’ve won that year. I know Cardi ran that year but I’m sure if Nipsey was as popular then as he is now he’d probably win. I know people shyt on the Grammys but it is what it is.
