The Rainmaker
Mr. Money in the Bank
Nakamura will wrestle tonight
oh, shyt.
oh, shyt.
oh, shyt. That’s why I refuted, “Shibata is like a junior high student who has just entered his rebellious age. Pro-wrestling is a brawl? Killing? Then why are you wrestling in the first place!”
These words didn’t just come out of my mouth out of anger, this is what I’ve been advocating for years. And I still feel the same.
And last year when he fought in the G1, he got good reaction from the crowd with his Bachi Bachi (MMA/Brawler/Battle Arts style) match. I felt the locker room feel uneasy about it. But it didn’t perturb me at all. I could imagine to a certain extent that the crowd will react to slaps and kicks.
I take pride in saying that Shibata’s style was accepted because “Tanahashi / Okada” styles were established as a basis. There is a foundation for “A bit old-school NJPW” style matches to be accepted in the current NJPW. This is not a bluff. I believe so from the bottom of my heart.
There is no “Next” to those Bachi Bachi style matches. As I pointed earlier when I talked about dangerous moves, fans will seek for more intensity. And the wrestlers have to escalate their violence. And a gruesome scene that you would want to look away will take place on the ring again.
- Is there a discord between you and Tanahshi since when you two were rookies?
Shibata : I don’t know, really. He probably didn’t like me from day one. I didn’t have any feeling of likes or dislikes towards him… I mean, our way of thinking towards pro-wrestling are completely different. He’s said upfront that he doesn’t approve of my "Puroresu". Disapprove it all you want. I've never liked his Puroresu anyway.
- So, you don’t like Tanahashi’s Puroresu either.
Shibata : “I couldn’t care less about him” either. I didn’t notice his existence until he started picking on me. I never cared about him to start with… (*wry smile)
- You didn’t notice him until he started picking on you?
Shibata : It’s been some years since I left NJPW. And if Tanahashi doesn’t approve of me, we have to exchange our time we’ve gone through. I want to see it for myself.
- So we’ll be seeing a collision of what you two have accumulated.
Shibata : If he goes that far, I’ll have to see if what I’ve been doing all these years were wrong. He’s denying me after all. He clearly said that he’s disapproving me. Does he really mean it? I don’t think I’ve done so much wrong. I’ve been working on what I believe in as Puroresu. We’ve been facing two directions from the start, so it’s only natural.
- It’s natural that there are varieties in style.
Shibata : … I guest he just doesn’t like it, does he? I dived into what he's looked away from. And here I am again in front of him. Whether he doesn’t like it, or he’s just jealous. Either way.
- In that regard, you two look like you’re going together like oil and water.
Shibata : It’s the difference in how we perceive Puroresu, isn’t it? But I think those differences are what makes pro-wrestling interesting. Ideologies, you know.
BrehWyatt since you're just getting into Shibata, here are some more of his best matches. shyt will have you making that smiley face for real!:is Shibata always that
with it? If so, I think he just made a new fan out of me.
as hell, to the point where people were wondering if the two were legit shooting on each other):

I still don't like him . I get why people can like him but he's not for meAs for the Tanahashi/Shibata thing, there was also a lot of heat because Shibata left them at the height of when business was down. Tanahashi, Nakamura, and Shibata were supposed to be the pushed big 3.
He then came back in 2012, and Tanahashi resented it, because they wanted to push Shibata again.
I see both sides. Tanahashi was probably always stewing, because they preferred Shibata over Tanahashi from day one. Shibata worked the type of style they LOVED back then, plus had the pedigree, and was a national champion in wrestling in high school.
So there was always that competitiveness, and Tanahashi was probably like "look they're handing everything to him again, and he doesn't even care about the business!" Kind of the Brock thing.
Supposedly there was a big revolt from Tanahashi & Nakamura due to the intentions of pushing Shibata again. The guy who ran the company ended up resigning over it. It's all a shame, because Shibata could be quite the star.
I feel that it will blow over (maybe even has already), and they'll probably push him to the top soon. I hope so, anyway.
I also think that Shibata is misunderstood. You can't be as great as he is at his craft without caring deeply. I just think that he doesn't care for all of the politics and nonsense and attention that comes with wrestling. He cares about being in the ring, and that's it.
From that perspective, I can see why a guy like Tanahashi would be much better as the face of the company.
Even in real photoshoots, I notice that Shibata stands a bit distant from everyone else. He's just naturally very aloof. I can see why that would rub people the wrong way, but I think that that's just his personality.
Very hard guy to read or to get to know. That's why I like him, though, because it all fits with his persona anyway.
There's an authenticity about him that I just love.
are you sure he's not a guy that couldn't make it in mma and realized he's better in wrestling ?
