FRANKLIN, Tenn. (WSMV/Gray News) - A Kroger store in Tennessee is converting to an entirely self-checkout experience.

WSMV reports the change is happening at a Kroger located in the Franklin area, about 20 minutes from downtown Nashville.

Kroger representatives said the changeover started last Friday.

The self-checkout lanes will also have new wider belts that can accommodate large-volume purchases.

According to the grocery chain, the self-checkout areas look a lot like a standard checkout lane but without a person working as the cashier.

For those not comfortable scanning their own groceries, the location will still have staff to help customers check out.

According to Kroger representatives, a store in Hillsboro Village will also be converting to self-checkout later this year.

Aren't they being sued across multiple states for wage theft? :jbhmm:Guess you can't get sued for stealing workers paychecks if you have no employees....

It's funny, self-checkout has been a thing in my state for over a decade and no one seems to like it any better than when it was first implemented and with the price of groceries skyrocketing the justification for it seems flimsier by the day.

This is what happens when you're a monopoly and whatever competition you have, they strive to do less you than you.

Publix is the only store I can think of that was significantly better than Kroger.

I mean we know just about every retailer is going to do this at some point. It increases productivity since one person can oversee like 5-10 people checking out simultaneously. I don't mind self checkout, but my issue is I know they are trying to find new ways to pay as many people as possible and they won't increase the pay of the workers who are now more productive technically.

The problem is, at least at my local stores there isn't even a worker overseeing anything, or they're doing double duty sorting go-backs way down at customer service and 'supervising' self-check.

I don't mind it so much either but in my state you can't buy alcohol at self so you either wait for a cashier to come to the front or leave without it. And I've had to put my cart aside to help a black elder more than once because they couldn't figure out how to use the machine and there was not a single worker in sight. The GenXers who learned how to figure out new tech in the 90s and 2000s can get by but my 87yr old grandmother would've left the store emptyhanded and hungry.

Those are all great points and is definitely problems that show why you realistically can't have all self checkout. However they will still do it lol. I heard renting is about to go the same way where if you are technologically illiterate you will be fukked since it will be almost entirely app based.

Oh yeah it's definitely still going to happen. They saw just how far people were willing to be inconvenienced and wait in long lines during the pandemic when they were legitimately short staffed and took their cues from there. The Dollar Tree (a store famous for only having one cashier since wayyyy before COVID) closest to me doesn't even have that anymore. Instead it's just a hand written note taped to a butler's bell that says "please ring for cashier". The era of "unprecedented times" ended about three years ago. shyt is just completely dystopian now.

That’s why Kroger always full of overweight employees that can barely walk limping all around the front of the store while you in a long ass line.
