a lot of times the 5 star dudes are just guys who are physically developed for that age (or a year or two older, depending on how shady the parents are)

i'm surprised earl thomas wasn't one though. i read an SI article that said he was a stud in high school.

nah, he stood out very early for UT but was a 3 star. don't think A&M even offered him

nice stat, bball is one of the rare sports where it's fairly easy to project stardom earlier on. players in fb can be inflated much more by system as well.
is it though? think about how many big time high school players fizzle out in college

like who? honest question.
pro maybe, but a 5 star hs player usually holds it down in college, meaning they are atleast the best player n the team.

You answered your own question. Size. Thomas is still "undersized" in the NFL, imagine what he was like in High School unless he was 5'10 and never grew, but even then 5'10 is probably average high school size for a db

fixed and i agree

they rate these guys based on their ability to contribute right away to a college program. it should be taken as a grain of salt with translation to the next level. People at the next level are all physically there. its actual talent that separates most after that

read this earlier but let's be honest, there's a lot more 3-4 star guys than 5 stars. Wonder what the stats look like for the draft

Crazy stat

not really. each year only 20-30 prospects get the label of 5 stars and only 400 are labeled as 4 stars. however, there are more than 4,500 Division 1 scholarships given out. as a result it shouldn't surprise anyone that there are alot of 3 star or below players in the NFL. read this article. its a great breakdown of how come we see so many dudes that were not highly recruited come out of nowhere (like Kahlil Mack) to become stars in the NFL. http://www.sbnation.com/college-foo...96710/nfl-draft-recruits-five-stars-two-stars

the truth is you are still far more likely to make it to the NFL as a 4 or 5 star prospect than you are as a 3 star or below. around 60% of 5 star prospects end up getting drafted while less than 10% of 3 stars become NFL draft picks.

its just that because there are so many more 3 stars or below, that its inevitable there will be more of them in the pros. recruting like the draft is an inexact science. just cause a dude is a 1st pick don't mean he'll be a star. look at how many 1st round picks become busts. and how Tom Brady a 6th rounder and Richard Sherman a 5th rounder are the two biggest stars on their respective teams. however, 1st round picks are still far more likely than dudes drafted in the 5th or 6th round to become stars.
