Dictator is a slippery slope, people only care when a Dictator is ineffective (and there is no way to peacefully remove them). Nobody complains about President Xi for example because he is seen as an effective leader.

Probably because they'd been talking about this for at least 2 years before he got reelected. Nothing was gonna stand in his way. El Salvador has improved in the short term and that's supported by salvadorans in the country and outside of it. That country had been going through the worst for about half a century between the wars, gangs, murders, poverty and general political instability. He needs another couple years to truly solidify what he's done with the mass lockups. It could've fallen apart with him out of office.

With a country like that, you need a great amount of time and subsequent leaders on your same timing to truly improve it long term. MS-13 was probably the "easiest" issue for him to deal with. Continuing to improve the economy and infrastructure is infinitely more difficult.

Thats the complicated thing, when turning countries from 0 it is debatable if that every 4 yrs debating what next stuff works vs laying out a 50-100 year plan. The issue though usually when you have these "benevolent dictators" rarely is society groomed for life post dictatorship once it is ready for democracy OR if the baton is to be handed off nobody is groomed, it is usually the dictator dies unexpectedly and people scramble for power.

Not surprised. Tyrants always start by targeting an "enemy," claiming only they can clean it up, then use that fear to strip away your rights, silence dissent, and seize power. The kind of "law-and-order" he was pushing always leads to authoritarianism. We're seeing that play out here.
