If there is one group of people you don't want to upset, it's NASCAR fans and drivers.

It's pretty safe to say former NFL quarterback and FOX Sports Live analyst Donovan McNabb understands that now.

Following Friday night's NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season finale, McNabb and the FOX Sports Live crew were discussing where Jimmie Johnson's dominance ranks in sports today.

While McNabb said Johnson was the third-most dominant in sports, he made it very clear he did not think the five-time champ was an athlete.

Immediately, the NASCAR Twittersphere exploded as they came to the defense of race car drivers everywhere.

Eventually, the hashtag #PeopleWhoAreMoreOfAnAthleteThanDonovanMcNabb emerged and fans and drivers.

Jimmie Johnson took the higher road, responding to the criticism Saturday morning.

After hordes of drivers, fans and industry insiders bashed McNabb throughout the day, the former quarterback fired back.

Just to help Donovan out, here is Merriam-Webster's definition of an athlete: "a person who is trained or skilled in exercises, sports, or games requiring physical strength, agility, or stamina."

And you know twitter went racial with it too.

Touchy rednecks...Nascar and race car driving in general is a skill...they're not athletes. I don't care if it gets really hot in the car or if the g forces in the car make it really intense, you're still driving a car. None of these little skinny or pudgy dudes who race cars look like they can get on a field or court and run and gun with real athletes. They get so touchy over this shyt because they know it's true.

Dunno about Nascar, but F1 drivers:

can keep their heart rate over 200 for a few hours

can take 5+ G's of force on their necks (supports about 25kg)

usually have body fat percentages of under 10

have split second reaction times

if Willfork can be called an athlete then why can't a driver? :manny:

I don't know if this "fact" is true but the average person can probably do the same if true. The human body adjusts to its surroundings if possible.

Nascar drivers don't have physical talent in the way of muscle and strength so this again sounds something anyone can do.

No doubt, lol:

What an inspiring athlete.

have split second reaction times[/quote]

Professional League of Legend and COD players have incredibly fast reaction time too yet most people wouldn't consider them athletes.

Wilfork has physical talent; NASCAR drivers do not.

Then McNabb shouldn't get touchy over N bombs and wreckless talk since its lie being talked. Unless he really s the names rednecks call him.

Your logic is pretty flawed...

But golf is a sport. You walk at least 5 miles, usually drunk outside a professional events and gotta knock balls 300yrds to be competive.

Is a NFL pocket passer an athlete? Especially if he's in the shotgun. Throwing a ball is about skill, timing, and reading a defense. You just gotta not be a slob so you move backwards from under center. You need a certain level of arm/shoulder strength, but you need that to swing a golf club to get a ball 300plus yards.
