My mother and Aunts were onto RnB, my father and uncles into African music, Rhumba etc, my surrounding was reggae, dancehall and urban local music, the only genre I had to discover on my own was hip hop. As an African living in the continent, I couldn't get the themes of hip hop till I got older. But RnB and Reggae have that universal message easier for a child to digest.

What changed when you got older?

My parents listened to nothing but old soul records, county and gospel music. Mahelia Jackson,Stax,Motown,Jim Reeves,Charley Pride,Percy Sledge,JoeTex,Al Green, everything from that era was playing. My brothers listened to 70s funk/jazz/soul and rock music,James Brown ,EWF, Parliament,Funkadelic,Led Zeppelin,Jimi Hendrix, Mandrill,Sly,Stevie Wonder,Donny Hathaway ,Herbie Hancock, George Duke,Brecker Brothers,Slave,Bootsy Collins. I grew up with nothing but American music and our own traditional Kawina/,Jama/Winti music and popular Caribbean styles like Calypso/Kaseko

All we had playing was reggae and dancehall. I’m an 80’s baby that had no knowledge of hip hop and R&B pre ‘94. We only had the one TV in the house and we never controlled it. Maybe Saturday mornings if we were lucky.

Finally my older sisters moved in and they played whatever they want. My sister bought me my first CD. Usher’s My Way then John B’s Cool Relax.

We were the typical LA belizean family. Every weekend the whole family got together. Straight Punta and Soca music all weekend long. Kids be mad.

This tread is very eye opening. It makes sense why there is so much anti-African American sentiment or just passive aggressive dismal of issues African Americans understand to be important especially when it come to white supremacy and politics in America. It honestly makes me feel a little better, because I sometimes rack my brain trying to understand how black posters on here can be so naïve to outright hostile to very important issues. I’m not even being divisive it just makes sense . I feel a lot better actually :ehh:

Old school reggae, but only current hip hop and R&B.

My older cousins (early 80s babies) were always playing hip hop and R&B around me when I was a baby/child in the 90s; they're probably why I listen to 90s hip hop/r&b today. The older people in my family, as expected, played reggae from multiple generations. I didn't hear much older music beyond reggae until I started building my music library and beat making. That's when I got into funk, soul, disco, jazz, etc.
