Really it was cable TV, older cousins and siblings. I was really in love the moment I first heard it b/c it was so different and truly an artform. No two rappers sounded alike and it was so much variety that it was like discovering new art everyday. I'm older so I came in back in the late 80s to early 90s. People don't seem to understand it wasn't just the music it was the movies and TV shows that accompanied the music as well. East Coast and hip-hop in general was a beautiful thing. In the late 80s early 90s you almost had to go wait for the shyt. Rap City was just getting started in 89 and even then it wasn't on everyday like that/ Planet Groove and Video Soul/Donnie Simpson and R&B in general ran BET. Yo MTV raps was on but again it was only on the weekends at first along with shows like Pump It Up. Great times. I still remember my first time watching the video for Da Mystery of Chessboxin and losing my shyt especially when ODB verse came on with him singing like that.

It was pretty much the radio, TV (MTV & BET), and some older cousins for me. I have to constantly remind myself how young some of you are from post like these, when most of you mentioned being put on by even your parent(s). I’m from a generation where my parents, aunts, and uncles were strictly R&B, Blues, Funk, Jazz, Gospel, and some Go-Go heads. I can probably count on one hand as of this moment the rap songs that my parents generally liked. For some of them hip-hop music was largely noise to them that flipped samples from older songs they loved/liked. My ma and pops were quick to point out samples from songs I used to listen to back in the day, and would direct me to the original records.
