The problem is there is a severe shortage of police officers. Last year LAPD was down 176 police officers. According to the L.A. Times approximately 600 officers in LAPD are expected to retire or leave the department by the end of 2023. That department is so desperate they are trying to rehire retired officers. People complain about the increase in crime, but then complain about the increase in police.
This leads to another issue. It's true that police officers should be more intelligent and disciplined, but college educated people typically don't want the job. When I was in college, there were hardly any people, especially black people who wanted to become police officers. That begs the question. If we don't police our community, who will? Most police these days are former military.
The city in which I work is majority black, but the police department is majority white. The police Chief and 2nd in command are black, but all the new hires have been mostly white.
Sounds like we need civics 101 back in schools
