Nah didn't say you never heard him, but thought you said you didn't really check for him like that. So was wondering what you heard. If that how you feel then cool but it's not the consensus among Hip Hop heads, but your allowed to have your own opinion. Have you heard Tragedy's full work? He's far from average. I don't have old ears, I got Hip Hop ears... I don't know what you got lol.
I'm of the variety that no matter what genre of music I am listening to, the artist needs to have an interesting voice/ delivery first and foremost and if not, they better be saying some extremely profound shyt.

cmon dude, Trag was a good MC, but not a great MC. You actin like he up there with G Rap and them. nah man, he just wasnt. I mean he wasn't a slouch but he wasn't really all that captivating either.

I don't think they know the history, Trag was a prodigy, hence why he was Juice Crew. He was the real Prodigy lol, infact he was Havoc's mentor, and he was a huge influence to Nas.
See this is a perfect example of a hip hop purist getting all wrapped up in the narrative like little fan girls. I could care less what his backstory is when I'm listening to the music.
Purist? What does that mean that your views are impure? And nah, I mentioned that to emphasize the respect other artists have for him and his artistry. Why would he be Havoc, CNN's mentor and influence Nas hugely if he was average? Or be allowed to be a member of the legendary Juice Crew at such a young age?
Really, backhistory aside....Trag is an all-time great MC, he is just very unsung and this was mainly due to bad label deals, most notably, the fukk up of the release of AAO which basically was a classic album soundscaped by some of the best producers of that time. when you talk lyricism he is not in the class of G Rap. but shyt, not too many are. he was the driving force and overseer of that entire War Report album. his peak was after his first two albums but thats where the world passed him by due to the label fukkery. to me, Trag and AZ were the best to ever blend the conflict of thug life and righteousness, without sounding conflicted.
just like there are good basketball players, boxers, actors, etc....that had the talent but never became really big due to whatever reason...this is the category that Trag falls into.
No one outside of the East coast would rank Trag as an all-time great. I have more respect for Bay nikkas saying Mac Dre is a goat or Southern nikkas stanning 3k than I do this stupid narrative.

The back story will help you understand the music more... When trag was intelligent hoodlum with marley i thought he was nice... the Black and Proud was my joint back then .. But then he got locked up and NAS came and blew ... Trag been jealous ever since...
It basically comes down to what NORE did for Capone ... When pone went to jail Nore kept his name out there and even mad him executive producer.. Trag felt when he got locked these new cats her birthed should at least acknowledge and and NAS didnt do it as much as he wanted.
