This article explicitly states

Brent Hood, who was the supervisor of shooting victim Ron Lane, says his employee was gay.

Police say Stancil went into the college print shop shortly after 8:00 a.m. armed with a 12 gauge pump shotgun with a pistol grip. Sgt. Jeremy Sutton says Stancil fired one time.

Sutton says Stancil had a calculated plan and that he in fact carried it out. The sergeant said the shooting suspect left campus immediately following the shooting, and that he left Wayne County on a motorcycle.

That motorcycle was found abandoned on I-95 near Lumberton. Police don't know how Stancil made his way to Florida.

Asked if the victim's sexual orientation played a part in the hate crime, Sutton said they are not divulging that part of the investigation at this time.

Police say Stancil's eye tattoo was done as recently as Saturday. Sutton says they are investigating the tattoo and it's possible connection to white supremacy.

Damn, they really are trying to save face with this guy...they're just turning this into an anti-gay hate crime.

I guess they're not explicitly stating it, or some news outlets are avoiding this...because it let's the cat out the bag that America is a white supremacist country. White supremacy is seldom referenced in the news or the media. Racists don't come out of thin air. How can that possibly be downplayed?

  He then accepted a lawyer during a second attempt at the hearing, the station reported.
  
  Stancil has repeatedly insisted that the openly-gay Lane flirted with his younger brother, but the neo-Nazi's mother has denied the claims and said in comments to the station that her son "has mental issues."
  
  The court appearance came only three days after Stancil stormed the printshop where Lane worked and shot him dead, authorities said. He was arrested hours later on a Daytona Beach, Florida, beach and flown back to North Carolina for Thursday's hearing.
