In 2009 Jason Brown signed a five-year, $37.5-million contract with the St. Louis Rams that made him the highest-paid center in the NFL.

Five years later, after earning more than $25 million of that contract, Brown is a farmer who's helping to feed the hungry.

CBS News caught up with Brown in Louisburg, North Carolina, where he runs a 1,000-acre farm after learning how to grow crops on YouTube.

Brown was drafted 124th overall in 2005 and played nine seasons in the NFL before getting cut by the Rams in the spring of 2012.

At age 29, he still had plenty of NFL years ahead of him. He wasn't playing at the level he was in 2009, but his career was far from over. He had interest from a number of teams, including an offer from the Baltimore Ravens.

But he walked away from the game. The NFL world was surprised, and ESPN ran a story with the headline, "The Curious Case Of Jason Brown."

"My agent, he told me, 'You're making the biggest mistake of your life,'" Brown told CBS. "And I looked right back at him and I said, 'No I am not.'"

Brown is doing this to help the less fortunate. He grows sweet potatoes and other vegetables, and donates his harvest to food pantries. According to the New & Observer, he has given away 46,000 pounds of sweet potatoes and 10,000 pounds of cucumbers this fall.

CBS

"When you see them pop up out of the ground, man it's the most beautiful thing you could ever see," he said of harvesting the sweet potatoes.

It does look pretty fun:

Brown went to school at the University of North Carolina. He had no idea how to farm back in 2012. He learned on YouTube.

It's a great story about life after football. Watch the entire CBS report here:

New York City
@Bryan Danielson This thread is old as hell lol. Anyway I wouldn't mind living in NC if it was Charlotte and maybe Raleigh.

If I ever move to the south my top choices are Richmond, Charlotte, Atlanta and Raleigh. I wouldn't want to live in a rural area though, the culture shock would be too extreme after living in NY.

Richmond VA is my top choice, close enough to DC for a day trip, seems like a nice city on the low :ahh:

Overall I'd like to stay in the Tri State Area somehow, but if that wasn't possible those would be my top choices.

When I made that post I went to Raleigh (To visit family) and Wilmington.... :damn: at how far out Wilmington is, its like two hours from I-95 :mjcry:

Also I didn't get to go into the city/triangle part of Raleigh, would have bugged me out seeing NC being so urban after only to Rocky Mount prior to that.

Lincolnton? You got to be shytting me...born and raised in the L.

A lot of rednecks but a good place to live. Low taxes and just a short drive from anywhere (Gastonia 20 minutes, Charlotte 40 minutes, Hickory 30 minutes, Boone 2 hrs)

Well see there you go.... Wilmington.

:bryan: but yes... Charlotte, Raleigh, Durham, and the Triad area are prolly the BEST spot to live.... Not to completely shyt on the other cities cuz there are some nice other towns too

Thats what I do love about NC, is the options this state gives for the shyt you can see and do unlike a bunch of other states.

Cuz lets be real after NY and Cali, maybe Tx, what other states haves nice multiple cities and towns that people want to visit or live?

Yes, PA has Philly for example...... but lets be really no one is really checking for Pittsburgh and I have never heard no one be like "yo breh Harrisburg is POPPIN!! Yo my G, lets go to Scranton!"

Same can be said about Illinois and Georgia..... Outside of Chicago or Atl could niccas really rock with Edwardsville, Ill or Macon, Georgia like that?:francis:

Most people that come to the Triad and Charlotte are really pleasantly surprised how it really it. Hell living in Charlotte it now to the point where on a day by day bases you meet more people from out of the state here than native Charlotte people

And I'm not even gonna bring up our NY problem down here.:mjpls:
