before I begin, just want to say I'm not one of these bitter posters that complain about new technology, as I purchase everything new tech wise, consoles get em all on release dates, mac's, had HDTV in 2005 when a 32inch cost 1,000. and purchased a 3DTV straight away.

BUT... 4k is just impractical. even from a pirate point of view, at least you can download a 3D movie in no time, to download a 4K movie would take crazy long, equally as long for the person to upload it.

to download legally would take ages also

to stream you'd need an amazing internet connection

this gen of consoles, yeah the gen that just came out.. cant play any games in 4k

tv broadcasters don't even have enough bandwith to transmit 4k TV , they're having a hard enough time with 1080p

a lot of bluray players don't support 4K

most youtube videos are not 4K

breh's the list is endless. how is this supposed to take off
In several years 4K will be the new standard. It's inevitable. TV manufacturers will phase out 1080p sets like they did 720p / 1080i sets. You'll only be able to buy 4K sets.

Almost all the major streaming outlets have embraced 4K and the 4K Bluray players will be out in a couple months.

its not doing better than 3D,

3d has TV CHANNELS, console video games, and a shyt load of movies you can buy legally and illegally. 4k does not have this.

how would we get quicker to 4k if the TV NETWORKS DONT EVEN HAVE ENOUGH BANDWITH FOR 1080P????
3D is pretty much dead. The new 4K standard for Blu-Rays doesn't even include 3D in it at all. Vizio has totally abandoned it.

1. Apple is gonna announce a new Apple TV next month & it won't support 4K. (As a reminder, you can buy a 4K media box for as cheap as $35 from a site like Gearbest.)

2. Most movies are still NOT being mastered and/or shot at 4K. If 4K really got next why aren't the movie studios shooting their films digitally in 4K or at least on Film?

3. Most folks feel 4K Blu-ray won't ever be a thing. They feel 4K will be digital only since Blu-ray never really took off like they expected it to and the sales are dwindling due to everyone preferring streaming media services.

4K will be the standard, but it hasn't even been the standard on the pc yet.

The pc leads and then everything else follows. Give it 2-3 years.

Oh and 3D was always bs, knew that wouldn't go anywhere.

I predict the next gen of consoles will be 4k and will cost more. Once the PC gaming side can get a $400 or less card that can do 4k 60fps, it's over for 1080p on pcs and consoles.

I also predict that sub $400 gpu coming out within 2 years

4k will be the gaming standard next gen.
the next gen of consoles won't be out for another 8 years, by then they'll be pushing 8k

1080i I mean but U-Verse does 1080i no problem and 1080i has same pixels as 1080p just at 30 fps instead of 60 fps

edit: and companies are more than capable of streaming 1080p. You can stream 1080p, 60 frames per second on 3 mb/s upload speed for the most part. These companies are offering 50 mbs speeds as the norm now and up to 300 mbs up and down in places like Dallas and some even faster in other places.

Them not doing it cause it saves them money is another thing.
:stopitslime:so I was right they don't transmit in 1080p

the fact you don't know how bad 1080i is makes all your opinions void

I've mentioned before on this forum that as much as 4K has been pushed at CES the last few years, Hollywood themselves aren't really on-board with 4K.

Whenever I look up tech specs for recent movies on IMDB, I notice most movies nowadays ARE NOT being Mastered (or even shot) in 4K.
exactly, all you have to do is go to the theatre to see that.

I don't even think 3d is great, but at least movies are being shot, sold, uploaded and downloaded in 3d.
distribution of 3d is far greater than that of 4k

This. 4k isn't just some gimmick like 3d it's actually just higher resolution. As the tech becomes cheaper and better it will eventually become the new standard.
:comeon: at thinking 10 or 15 years from now we're still gonna be using 720/1080 as standard

Tvs are usually pushed by consoles or porn, neither are supporting this. When hd came out within first year so many ppl had hdtv to play xbox, how many people you know with 4k watching 4k content?

1080i is same as 1080p just at 30 fps instead of 60 fps... dont you console players all scream about how you cant tell the difference between 30 and 60 fps or that its not a big deal

I'm pretty sure 1080i draws half the pixels in one pass then the other pass draws the other half alternating while 1080p draws the full picture in every pass. Is that not why 1080p uses twice the bandwidth of 1080i?

Hence why I said as the tech becomes cheaper and better...its probably gonna take a while longer than the jump to hd because there are diminishing returns going from 1080 to 4k and the average consumer can't justify the cost when hd already looks good enough...but as bandwidth increases and the price to make and view 4k content drops it will get more widespread...do u expect us to use 1080 forever?

4K is going to be industry standard. It will take time before it becomes common place however. We're at the very beginning of the transition and you act like because a switch hasn't been flipped and it all transitioned overnight it won't happen.

This isn't a decision the consumer themselves will make. The industries will make it. It will be like the transition to HDTV. At some point you entered a store and standard definition TVs were no longer available. When the Xbox 360 came out many people were using SDTV these days very few people are.

The problem with 4K is first it doesn't have anything pushing it to accelerate the adaptation. The prices have fallen to 1080p set levels and manufactures are phasing out 1080p sets so as people buy new TVs over time it will settle in. The second problem is the common size screens people buy and the distances people sit from their TVs render 4K pointless.

I have a 4K TV and at most I have to sit maybe about my physical height's length away from the TV to notice the level of detail difference. Sit much further away from it and it might as well be 1080p. 4K is reaching the level of diminishing returns. Nothing is ever really going to drive 4K adaptation beyond time because of this.
