The Hawks will pursue unrestricted free agent Luol Deng, according to a person familar with the situation.
Teams can not negotiate with free agents until July 1. Expect the Hawks to make a hard push to add the small forward.
The Hawks cleared salary cap space Sunday night by agreeing to trade Lou Williams and the rights to first-round draft pick Lucas Nogueira to the Raptors for John Salmons, who will be waived upon the completion of the deal Monday. With the move the Hawks have more than $15 million to spend in free agency but it is not certain that the team will use it all to sign Deng.
It's no secret that the Hawks are in need of another small forward/wing defender. Deng (6-foot-8, 220 pounds) would fit such a need on both ends of the court. The 28-year-old has played 10 NBA seasons, the first nine with the Bulls. He was traded to the Cavaliers in the middle of last season. He averaged 16.0 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.9 assists for the two teams last year. His career numbers are a similar 16.0 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.5 assists.
Deng also fits the Hawks off-court model. Deng was given the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award by the Professional Basketball Writers Association for outstanding community service last season. He was honored for his philanthropic work in his native South Sudan.
